Wanting and Waiting as Vaccinations Widen in California

We’ve only just begun might be the best way to describe what’s happening with the vaccines for the coronavirus that has now been around for more than a year.

The vaccines are here, and they will continue to be produced but with millions of doses already shipped, hundreds of millions of more doses will be needed.

The problem and the challenge include getting all those doses of vaccine into the arms of as many people as possible as quickly as possible.

And so far, in these several weeks following the emergency approval of the vaccines, it’s going slower than had been hoped.

Governor Newsom said this week that only about one-third of the nearly 2.5 million vaccine doses the state has received had been administered.

And to give you an idea of how big the task is, just remember that in San Diego County alone, there are an estimated 500,000 people in Phase 1A of the priority list, which includes healthcare workers and residents of long-term care centers.

And now with people 65 and over moving into this first group, the crush of people wanting to get vaccinated will be greater. Hospitals in the county already say they don’t have enough doses to put all those needles in all those arms yet.

The pandemic for nearly a year already has taught us lessons about being patient and we’re going to need those lessons to get us through this time now of wanting and waiting to get the vaccines we’ve been hoping for.
