The path to reopening schools has become a pretty bumpy one. And the debate has become a very contentious one.
There is little disagreement that not being in school is not good for kids’ education and is putting many kids behind in their learning that could take years to reverse. And there is little disagreement not being in the classroom is having some negative impacts on a lot of kids’ emotional, mental and social development.
But there is a disagreement over when and how all the schools should reopen. Even with a good number of private schools having been open for months.
The headlines are filled with the news of the battle between governors and mayors and the heads of the large teachers’ unions. And there is the news about some parents banding together to get their kids back in school while some other parents, who do want their kids in school, but, not yet.
Governor Newsom says he wants schools open sooner than later and President Biden has said he wants most schools to start opening within 100 days of his inauguration.
So, the debate rages, just as the coronavirus which had been raging, is now showing signs of slowing.
Getting everyone vaccinated is going to take some time and that effort faces challenges with new polls showing one third of Americans skeptical about the vaccines.
But whatever it takes to do whatever needs to be done to get kids back in the classrooms should be a priority of every parent, every government leader and every teachers union.
