Warming Up to the Reopening of California's Economy

What a better week to fully reopen California’s economy than next week.

On Tuesday, the color-coded COVID tiers fade into extinction, and as we head into next week, the state’s rate of new coronavirus infections is the lowest it has been since March of last year when all this began.

Close to 60-percent now of Californians have received at least one dose of vaccine, one of the highest vaccination rates in the country. As the restrictions on businesses all go away and the masks of vaccinated Californians all come off, on Tuesday, the state will be in the middle of what is not unusual, even in June these days, a heat wave. But dealing with the heat without a mask on the faces of those vaccinated, will make it easier.

So while the calendar says it won’t officially be summer until the following week, the summer season in San Diego and up and down the state will have kicked in by the time the full reopening of the economy day on Tuesday.

Temperatures as high maybe as 120 in our deserts and above 80 degrees at the beaches mean summer is here. And unfortunately, so is the drought, with the latest report showing more severe drought conditions.

So while those who are vaccinated will be able to worry less about the virus as of next week, we will still have what we often have during the summer, heat waves, drought and an increased risk of wildfires as a result.

It sure would be nice if we could come up with a vaccine for those conditions as effective as we have done for the coronavirus.
