Why Skies Over San Diego Are Looking Kind of Weird

You may have heard the reports already but now we all know why the skies over San Diego County looked so strange yesterday afternoon.

They were darker, hazy and just kind of weird. Almost as if Midwest-like thunderstorms were forming Now that it has been reported to have been the smoke from the wildfires in Central California, at least we know what it was and why we might see it again today.

As the National Weather Service officially describes it, “It is a stratified mass of smoke about 10,000 feet above the ground that is dispersed throughout layers of the atmosphere”.

Forecasters say that smoke from what are called the Windy and KMP Complex fires is expected to linger in the air at least through today. They say it could even block out the sun. That could almost be like a partial solar eclipse.

The good news is that San Diego County Air Pollution Control District says despite the smoke from fires north of us, the air quality will be good to moderate. But with the way California’s wildfires have become larger and more prevalent in these last few years, and the changes in the climate, we will likely have even more hazy skies and drifting smoke.

If it were to get real bad at times, at least we all have masks to put over our mouths and noses.
