The Story of San Diego's Diane Powers as Bazaar del Mundo Turns 50

It was a project that revitalized San Diego's Old Town and this week Diane Powers’ Bazaar del Mundo is celebrating its 50th year.

She opened Bazaar del Mundo and the original Casa de Pico restaurant on November 4, 1971. "This November marks a milestone for our businesses," owner and operator Diane Powers said in a press release for the celebration. "We couldn’t have done it without our devoted customers and longtime dedicated staff, whose continued support has been the foundation of our success."

In 2005, Powers lost the contract to the site when a nationwide concession firm outbid her and the state wanted it to be more of an historic park, but it failed to attract many visitors and was eventually turned over to a local operator. But when the state made its decision, Diane Powers relocated Bazaar del Mundo to a new site in Old Town next to her Casa de Guadalajara Restaurant at Juan and Taylor and opened the new Casa de Pico restaurant in La Mesa at Grossmont Center and has continued her track record as one of San Diego's most successful business owners.

The Bazaar del Mundo’s 50th Anniversary Fiesta & Marketplace begin Thursday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. with a kickoff celebration at 6 p.m. featuring Mayor Todd Gloria and other VIP's. The festivities continue through Sunday, Nov 7.  Live performances are scheduled through the weekend.
