A lot of people play golf, a lot of people watch golf on TV and now a lot of f people are talking about what’s going on in golf.
It used to be that Tiger Woods made most of the news in golf. But now it’s San Diegan Phil Mickelson whose name is at the top of the list of a string of professional golfers. That’s because they have chosen to play in all new golf tour called LIV, L-I-V, because they will be paid a lot more money, a lot more.
But Mickelson and the others are drawing fire because LIV is being funded and providing money for the super-size pay for the golfers by Saudi Arabia, a country known as much for its human rights abuses as it is for its oil.
The PGA tour quickly suspended Mickelson and the other golfers. The Saudi backed LIV Golf calls that vindictive. But a lot of golf fans on sports talk radio are not happy with Mickelson and the others for being so greedy with some accusing them of having gone to the dark side and become the Darth Vader’s of sports.
Mickelson told his biographer that he believes it’s “scary” to be involved with the Saudis but said there were other factors at play.
Of course, greed has been part of professional sports for decades with baseball, football and basketball owners making gobs of money and many players in those sports making enormous amounts of money for playing a game. And it all trickles down to the fans who are forced to pay higher and higher ticket prices to watch them play.
But the game of greed is an awful one to watch.
