Going into last night’s game, a lot of Dodger fans thought that with their team winning Game 1 the night before and the way the Dodgers have been so dominating that the Padres’ goose was cooked even before the first pitch.
But when that real live goose landed on the outfield grass and sat there for awhile during the game, it turned out it that it was the Dodgers goose that was cooked.
The Padres won 5-3 with the Dodgers, with men on base, unable to score any more runs after the goose made its appearance and was gobbled up by members of the ground crew.
And from the sports history books, there was something coincidentally symbolic last night about another Goose in the Padres’ past.
As AJ Cassavell at MLB.com pointed out on Twitter, about relief pitcher Josh Hader who came in at the end of the 8th inning, soon after the goose’s appearance, and got four outs to get the save, memories flashed back more than three decades to relief pitcher Goose Gossage who was the first Padre pitcher to record a postseason save of more than one inning.
That was back in the 1980’s when the Padres busted the Cubs and went on to the World Series.
Was that goose landing on the field last night a sign that something might be in the works in the baseball script written for this year...that has the Padres landing in the World Series? Stay tuned.
