A lot of us like to root for the underdog and no one knows that better than any longtime San Diego sports fan.
So it was no surprise that so many not only local fans, but a good number of sports fans around the country, were rooting for the University of San Diego women’s volleyball team to win the national championship.
The team’s own adopted motto for this season was “why not us?”
That’s what can happen when you’re a smaller school, like USD, and facing much bigger schools, like Texas who beat the lady Toreros Thursday in the Final Four.
And USD is a very good team. How good? It turns out the two teams who will now play for the national college championship, Texas and Louisville, are the only two teams the Torero team lost to all season.
Texas and other schools may be bigger than USD, but no college women’s volleyball team from any school of any size had the determination, courage and grit than this team did. A team from a school that sits above San Diego on a hill near the coast.
And their accomplishment this year, making it to the Final Four, should be an inspiration to any team or any individual that may be looked at as an underdog.
