When you live in California, you’re probably used to getting calls and texts from family and friends back East after we have an earthquake in the state. Are you guys okay…the messages say.
But now in the last week or so, those texts and calls are all about the big storms, the heavy rain, the flooding, the mudslides, the strong winds, toppled trees and near record amounts of snow in the Sierra Nevada.
It’s not a surprise that family and friends are concerned…especially with how the weather folks describe all this…bomb cyclones and atmospheric rivers. It s0unds bad.
And actually it is pretty bad. Storms like the ones hitting California are causing lots of damage and at least 14 deaths and there may be more.
While central and northern California are getting hit the hardest by these storms so far, here in Southern California, we have seen some of the most damaging surf and coastal flooding in some time.
And the storm we are getting now is bringing us more rain and another storm coming this weekend to San Diego, is described as yet another atmospheric river.
The weather of course is one of the big reasons why people move to California. But not all weather is good…from the damaging winter storms now to the hot dry weather in the summer that spark and spread wildfires.
All that’s happening though should make us all respect the weather and the need to be prepared no matter where you live.
