Whenever you are downtown or near San Diego Bay, you see them. Navy war ships coming and going. And every time you are on the 15 passing MCAS Miramar, you see and often hear the fighter jets overhead practicing their takeoffs and landings. And whenever you drive on the 5 through Camp Pendleton you see the Marine helicopters conducting their training.
Sailors and Marines based in San Diego know they may be deployed and sent to anywhere in the world at any time.And it happens all the time.
And it’s happening now. With the San Diego based nuclear aircraft carrier the USS Abraham Lincoln just ordered to speed up its transit to the Middle East in case it is needed if Iran attacks Israel amid the tensions of the war in Gaza.
The huge ship includes F-35 fighter jets from Miramar and a squadron of helicopters from Naval Air Station North Island The aircraft carrier’s battle group also includes San Diego based destroyers the USS Spruance and the USS O’Kane as well.
When you live in San Diego, you come to know and appreciate the tens of thousands of military personnel at all of our local bases who are ready at any time to defend their country when called.
And now is one of those times, once again, when it’s an especially good time to thank them.
