A Small Fire Is a Good Reminder

A friend this past weekend was saying we need some rain. And she’s not the only one.

Yes, our rainfall total since the start of the rain year last October is way above normal. But all that unseasonably hot weather last month was not normal and set records for high temperatures for days in a row.

And that’s why this past Sunday’s small but scary brush fire in San Marcos got a lot of attention.

With flames threatening more than two dozen homes and with evacuation orders and warnings issued, there were a lot of worries before firefighters successfully and rapidly stopped the spread of the flames.

While we did have a lot wet weather early on this past winter, that increased the growth of vegetation, all the recent hot weather, began drying it out.

So, the vegetation fire in San Marcos is a useful reminder that fire season, while maybe more a concern in late summer and early fall, is also almost a year-round season.

And good reason for property owners to take steps now to clear brush and reduce fire risks as we head toward the summer.
