State Aims to Curb Gun Violence in San Diego

SAN DIEGO - The state is awarding millions of dollars in grants to address the increase in gun violence, and some of that funding will end up for programs here in San Diego.

The San Diego City Attorney's Office will receive $1 Million for it's ongoing education and training program for law enforcement agencies on the use of gun violence restraining orders. The orders allow for the temporary removal of firearms from people are at risk of harming themselves or others.

According to data from the governor's office more than three-thousand gun violence restraining orders were filed between 2016 and 2020. Of that number, 58 individuals had their guns confiscated by law enforcement because they had threatened to commit a mass shooting.
