NATIONAL CITY - Despite recent incidents, including the shooting of a 16-year-old boy, crime in National City has remained relatively low.
National City Police Chief Jose Tellez tells NBC 7 the homicide rate is now down to about two to four a year and his department mostly responds to domestic violence and aggravated assault calls. The focus now is on gun control, especially among youth.
"Guns are unfortunately being used by criminals of all ages and that's certainly concerning for us as a county," said Chief Tellez. "Certainly here in National City we see that."
The Chief's concerns come after a recent shooting where 16-year-old Damien Estrada was gunned down by a group of young people as he was walking home. The teen was shot in the head and remains in a coma.
