SACRAMENTO - State Senate Republicans are asking Governor Newsom to veto a controversial drug bill.
SB 57 would allow the cities of San Francisco, Oakland and Los Angeles to begin a pilot programs where addicts could apparently use drugs safely at clinics which would also provide access to overdose treatments and recovery programs. Republican lawmakers sent a letter to Newsom asking him to block the bill from becoming law, saying it would create so-called drug dens which would endanger neighborhoods and businesses.
State Senator Scott Weiner of San Francisco, who sponsored the bill, said it would help save lives.
A similar bill was vetoed by Newsom's predecessor Gov. Jerry Brown back in 2018.
