As the Biden Administration moves forward with a plan to forgive $10,000 dollars of student loan debt for most borrowers, the student loan burden is pretty low in some states, including California.
According to a survey from WalletHub, California, Washington and Utah are among the states with the lowest student debt adjusted for income. The survey did not say exactly why California came in with some of the lowest student debt but it could be because of the state's extensive community college network where most students qualify for some type of financial assistance. as well the large state college and university systems where tuition is typically lower than out of state or private universities.
West Virginia, Pennsylvania and South Dakota came out on top with residents having the most student loan debt. The survey also found Hawaii has the highest percentage of student loans with a past due balance or in default while New York has the lowest.
