SACRAMENTO - A bill requiring children in California to attend Kindergarten is on its way to Gov. Gavin Newsom's desk.
SB70, which was passed by the State Senate Monday, requires children to complete one year of Kindergarten before they're allowed to enter the first grade. Current state law doesn't require children to attend school until they are six years old.
This comes after many of the state's children skipped kindergarten during the COVID-19 pandemic, which some say has contributed to learning gaps. The Los Angeles Unified School District is among the education organizations supporting the bill.
If Gov. Newsom signs the bill it will go into effect for the 2024-2025 school year.
