Why There May Soon be Fewer Bonfires at San Diego Beaches

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego City Council will be taking up new rules for bonfires at city beaches.

The proposal from Councilmember Joe LaCava would clarify city code and ban any wood or coal fires outside of designated fire rings or pits, meaning makeshift fire pits on the sand would be prohibited. Propane grills, however, will still be allowed. The proposal received support from the city's Environment Committee back in May and the rules are similar to those in place at other beaches in the state.

Supporters say the move will cut down on the amount of smoke and embers that end up in nearby neighborhoods and cut down on any potential hazards for people walking on the sand. But critics say it strips away a longtime tradition and the city just doesn't have enough fire pits.

The council is expected to vote on the matter in October.
