CARLSBAD - The Carlsbad City Council ratifies an emergency declaration over bike safety.
The council will use $2 Million left over from last year's budget to begin making some improvements including more traffic enforcement and signage. But those who spoke at Tuesday's city council meeting say much more needs to be done.
Bob Embree, whose wife recently died after she collided with a car while riding an eBike, says speeding cars and distracted drivers are a big problem.
"I want no one to suffer like I do," Ebree said while addressing the council. "I couldn’t imagine if I lost my daughter, too. So if we could slow traffic down where kids are going to school that would be great.”
The city says there has been at least 57 collisions with bikes with cars since the start of the year, two of them fatal. Green stripping has already been painted on some roadways to make bike lanes more visible, but residents say more needs to be done. Some suggestions include roundabouts and speed bumps.
The council is expected to offer a more comprehensive bike safety plan by the end of September.
