How Many San Diego County Residents are in Prison?

SAN DIEGO - A new study shows a large number of San Diego County residents are behind bars.

New data from the Prison Policy Initiative shows 8,800 San Diego County residents were incarcerated at the time of the 2020 Census. According to iNewsSource the communities of City Heights, Barrio Logan, Encanto and Southeast San Diego - which are largely made up of People of Color - have incarceration rates at about double the statewide average. The outlet said those from wealthier communities, including Encinitas and La Jolla, are about half as likely as other Californians to end up behind bars.

The new data was compiled after California passed a law requiring census takers to count inmates from the places they are from, instead of where they are incarcerated.
