Business Owners speak out Against Proposed Warehouse Worker Protections

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors will take up a proposal to enact oversight and regulations on warehouse businesses in the area, but some business owners say the proposed policy is a move in the wrong direction.

County Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Nora Vargas are working on the proposal because they say some warehouse workers in the region are being treated unfairly.

Matt Jones, owner of Innovative Cold Storage Solutions in Otay Mesa tells NBC 7 a blanket policy could impact business owners who are doing things by the book.

Listen to the story below:

"What they're trying to do is discriminately discipline companies like mine who haven't don anything wrong," Jones said.

The proposal would add more oversight and another layer of protection for warehouse workers in the region. But Cal-OSHA already inspects working conditions, and the agency also looks into worker schedules and pay. Warehouse workers can also contact the agency directly and report workplace safety and other issues.

Supervisor Fletcher's office says the proposal will be brought to the board by the end of the month.
