SAN DIEGO - A building on the campus of UC San Diego is back open after authorities disposed of a suspicious substance which was left out in a lab.
A one liter bottle was discovered Wednesday night in Pacific Hall. It contained diethyl ether, a highly volatile and shock sensitive substance. San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Erik Windsor says the chemical may have just been left out accidentally.
"We do not believe that it was intentionally left here for any ill intent," said Chief Windsor. "It seems or appears that this chemical may have been just found in a beaker."
The building was evacuated for several hours as a precaution. San Diego Fire's Hazmat team, along with bomb squads from the Sheriff's Department and the FBI worked together to safely remove the bottle from the lab and placed it in a safe container, where it was blown up.
The university is investigating the incident.
