SAN DIEGO - The suspect in the killing of a University of Arizona professor has a troubled past, including right here in San Diego.
Murad Dervish, 46, was arrested Wednesday in Gila Bend, Ariz. for the shooting death of Professor Thomas Meixner at the university campus in Tucson. Dolgun Dervish, Murad's father, lives in South Carolina and tells reporting partner 10 News this is not the first time his son has gotten violent.
"He smashed the equipment I had in my restaurant with a crowbar and then he threw a plate at me and hit my back and then he hurt me," Dolgun said.
Not longer after that incident, Dervish moved here to San Diego to live with his mother and enrolled at San Diego State as a graduate student in 2018. In 2020 a woman filed a retraining order against him saying he harassed and stalked her while he was a teaching assistant at the university. Dervish also apparently tried to kill his mother during his time here as well.
Dervish's father says his son should be behind bars.
