SAN DIEGO - Doctors at one hospital in San Diego are asking parents to avoid taking their sick children to the Emergency Room.
The spike in Flu and Respiratory Syncytial Virus or RSV cases is starting to overwhelm hospitals nationwide and San Diego is no different, as we've seen a number of cases of RSV in children.
“If your child is sick, really you need to check in with your primary care doctor first and foremost," Dr. Nicholas Holmes of Rady Children’s Hospital told NBC 7. "We want to make sure the families are getting the right care at the right time and at the right place."
The hospital did send out a message to parents recently which says most of the respiratory viruses going around can last up to two weeks nd are treated with Tylenol, increased fluids and rest. But if your child is severely ill, the hospital is still an option, but wait times could be between two and four hours.
Doctors are recommending that children and their families get the flu shot and get vaccinated for COVID-19. The County of San Diego says only about 25-percent of residents have gotten the flu shot so far this season.
