When it Comes to Bike Safety, Carlsbad Police say Common Sense is Key

Carlsbad - After kids and adults unwrapped E-bikes for Christmas, one San Diego County City is sharing a message we all can learn from.

"You can’t be riding on sidewalks; sidewalks are for pedestrians," Carlsbad Police Lieutenant Scott Meritt told NBC 7. "Stop at stop signs. Stop at red lights. Stay on the right side of the street. If there are no bike lanes, follow all bike lane rules. Just be generally hyperaware."

Carlsbad declared a bike safety emergency back in August after a deadly E-bike accident took the life of a mother. The city saw 100 bike collisions with cars last year, way up from the 30 reported in 2019. Since then the city has put up safety signage, started putting in some dedicated bike lanes and enforcing helmet rules for younger riders.

Carlsbad Police also encouraging riders to take a bike safety class, which are offered by the San Diego Bike Coalition all year long.
