SAN DIEGO - More than 300 California schools are being recognized as Distinguished Schools this year, including 21 schools here in San Diego County.
Del Mar Union and Solana Beach school districts each toping the list with five elementary schools receiving the honor. Scripps Elementary and Mount Everest Academy in San Diego and Heritage K-8 Charter in Escondido are among other schools on the list.
The schools are selected based on state education performance indicators, including assessment testing, absences, suspension rates and socioeconomic data. The Distinguished Schools recognition program has been around since 1985.
San Diego County Schools honored:
- San Diego Unified – Scripps Elementary, Mt. Everest Academy and Innovations Academy
- Del Mar Union – Ocean Air, Sage Canyon, Ashley Falls, Sycamore Ridge and Carmel Del Mar Elementary
- Encinitas Union School District – Capri Elementary and El Camino Creek Elementary
- Escondido Union – Heritage K-8 Charter and Classical Academy
- Julian Union – JCS – Mountain Oaks
- Mountain Empire Unified – Elite Academic Academy
- San Diego County Office of Education – Classical Academy Vista
- Solana Beach – Carmel Creek Elementary and Solana Highlands Elementary, Solana Pacific Elementary, Skyline Elementary and Solana Ranch Elementary
- Warner Unified – Excel Academy Charter
