New Bill would Force Schools to Out Trans Students to Parents

SACRAMENTO - A new California bill would make it mandatory for teachers, counselors and other school employees to notify parents if a student is transgender.

AB 1314, authored by Assemblyman Bill Essayli (R-Riverside), would require school employees, within three days, to notify parents if they learn that a student is publicly identifying as transgender. The notification would be triggered if the student participates in gender-segregated sports or opts to use bathroom facilities for a gender other than the one appearing on their birth certificate.

Trans rights advocates say it's the latest round of "culture war attacks" against people who identify as transgender and the greater LGBTQ+ community. But the bill's author says this is a way for parents to get involved in their child's well-being.
