Parking Shock For Padres Opening Day

Today is opening day for the Padres and fans will be in for sticker shock with Special Event Parking rates.

The city will implement 10-dollar an hour rates starting two hours before and two hours after the Padres game. The rates will be in use for a half mile radius from State and 17th street and Broadway and Harbor Drive.

"That’s not the way to reduce that deficit; it’s the city’s job to encourage people to come downtown, not to dissuade them from coming downtown," Howard Greenberg, a San Diego resident, told reporting partner 10 News.

Some city leaders believe this surge in pricing will only backfire down the line.

On-street meters can be pre-paid and people with valid handicapped placards will be exempt from paying to park.
