The Padres may be part of the answer to San Diego’s money problems if a top city leader has something to say about it.
City council member Sean Elo/Rivera is proposing to take some of the money the city pays to the Padres as part of a joint use agreement to use for funding the arts.
Mayor Todd Gloria restored some funding libraries and rec centers but not the $12 million dollars he wants cut from arts and culture organizations.
Elo-Rivera said that he is pushing to slash the city’s share of Petco Park expenses while budget talks are still going on.
As he told the Union-Tribune in an emailed statement, “I won’t subsidize a $3.9 billion enterprise’s operations while we tell kids in this city that their library hours will be reduced and arts and culture programming will be eliminated”.
The San Diego City Council is holding a budget hearing for the public tonight at 6 City Hall.
