A senior San Diego County health official is arrested after a deadly hit-and-run crash in the Southcrest neighborhood.
Authorities said Assmaa Elayyat, a deputy director with the county Health and Human Services Agency, was booked Friday on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run before later posting bail.
Police said a 27-year-old woman waiting at a bus stop on National Avenue was killed after a vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, drove onto the sidewalk and struck the victim and a bus bench.
Investigators say the driver fled the scene but was later found nearby and arrested. Officials say there were no allegations of drugs or alcohol connected to the crash.
