What You Need to Know before Hitting the Road in 2023

SACRAMENTO - The New Year is just days away and the California Highway Patrol wants to remind you about some new traffic laws going into effect.

Among the changes are a crack down on street takeover and speeding. Drivers involved in so-called sideshows, street racing and speeding over 100 miles per hour that involves a death will now be considered gross negligence.

Other laws going into effect include:

  • AB 1909 increases protections for bike riders by requiring cars to move over one lane or slow down before passing them
  • SB 1087 requires recycling centers to keep records of vehicle information when removing catalytic converters a part of an effort to crack down on theft of those parts
  • AB 1946 will require the Highway Patrol to work with stakeholders to develop safety and training programs for E-Bikes
  • AB 1732 authorizes local law enforcement agencies to request the CHP to activate a "Yellow Alert" for fatal hit-and-run crashes
