A San Diego House Without A Book

One reason some  people who live  in low income communities have a hard time making ends meet is they simply lack skills that many take for granted.

We're talking about people who have a challenge reading, or perhaps never learned to read or speak English, and it's often generational.

The CEO of the San Diego Council on Literacy, Jose Cruz, tells KOGO news when young people are raised in a home where others don't read, they simply can't get ahead.

They are focusing efforts also at local elementary schools, Perkins, Logan, Sherman Heights and Burbank.

They're trying to come up with innovative ways other service agencies can also bring up reading while they helping customers.

The group is also trying to raise money and new or gently used children's books.

You can contact the Council on Literacy with donations of money or books by emailing contact@literacysandiego.org.
