Fighting For Her Life After San Onofre Shark Attack

A Vista woman remains in a medically induced coma after being attacked by a shark in San Onofre Saturday. 35-year-old Leeanne Ericson was swimming in the surf off the coast of Camp Pendleton about 6:30p.m. Saturday when a shark tore off the back of her thigh, from her bottom to her knee.  She almost drowned during the attack, but was rescued and flown to the hospital.

According to her mother, Ericson is "fighting for her life," and has a long road ahead of her with several surgeries.  A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Ericson, a mother of two, with medical bills.

Authorities closed the beach in an area known as Church and were warning residents and visitors to stay out of the water.  The beach in that area is expected to reopen Wednesday morning.  The attack, believed to have been by a great white or a sevengill shark, was only the 11th recorded in the area in the past seven decades. The most recent fatal shark attack in San Diego County was off Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach in 2008.
