Uninsured and under insured women qualify for free mammograms and there is a free mammogram event in Otay Mesa, Friday, May 11th.
This is the “Year of the Woman” and we have all watched in admiration as women speak up, use their voices, and talk about the unspoken.
For many in San Diego, the unspoken is breast cancer and Komen San Diego is here to be their voice.
Komen San Diego is the only organization in San Diego that will pay for breast cancer screening and diagnostic tests when someone cannot afford it and there is no other pay or source.
Susan G. Komen San Diego (Komen San Diego) along with Northgate González Markets will host a FREE mammogram and breast cancer screening event Friday, May 11th from nine to three in Otay Mesa at Northgate González Markets, 2909 Coronado Ave, San Diego, 92154.
To qualify for a mammogram, you must be uninsured or under-insured and low-income. Additionally, women who are over 40 years of age must have had their last mammogram at least one full year ago (365 days ago or longer). Those who are under 40 years of age and are experiencing symptoms also qualify.

In San Diego, six women a day are diagnosed with breast cancer and unfortunately one woman a day passes away from this disease.
Early detection and effective treatment provide the best chance of survival from breast cancer.
And that’s what Komen San Diego’s work is all about. Komen San Diego provides free mammograms, biopsies, ultrasounds, care coordination, education, research funding and financial assistance for breast cancer patients’ most critical needs during treatment.
Komen San Diego is the only organization that studies San Diego County to identify the gaps in breast cancer care and the barriers to health access and then work to fill those gaps.
Susan G. Komen is the largest nonprofit funder of breast cancer research outside of the U.S. government.
Nearly 40 percent of the organization’s research investment is focused on metastatic disease and much of that investment has been awarded to scientists in San Diego.
Susan G. Komen has set a Bold Goal to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50 percent in the U.S. by 2026.

This year, the walk will take place on Sunday, Nov. 4 in Balboa Park.

KOMEN SAN DIEGO’S WORK IN THE LATINA COMMUNITY :For almost 15 years, Komen San Diego has focused much of its work to eliminate breast cancer disparities in the Latina community in San Diego County.
Because of our joint efforts, the rate of Latina late-stage breast cancer and mortality rates have decreased, so much that they are now among the lowest in San Diego County.
Since 2000, the Hispanic death rate from breast cancer in San Diego has decreased from 14 percent to 10 percent in 2011.
