What Mexican Tariffs, IB Sewage Flows & Wildfires Could Mean for Summer

Just what we don't need, news about sewage, tariffs and wildfires just in time for the summer.

With news of the President’s plan to put tariffs on all products from Mexico coming the same day as the news of yet another closure of the beaches in Imperial Beach due to sewage flows from Tijuana, the coincidental timing of this news doesn’t go unnoticed. And it may even invite some humorous quips.

But no one in Imperial Beach is in the mood for humor.Nor are many political and business leaders in California.

As we’ve been reporting, tariffs are seen as taxes on products Mexico sells to American businesses that then can pass along the increase in their costs to consumers. And they worry about the impact if that 5-percent tariff goes up to 25-percent as the White House says it could be by this fall.

And as we’ve also reported this week, the so-called “Stop the Poop” campaign in the South Bay is growing and they are joining in efforts to stop the flow of sewage from Mexico by the city, the county and the state who already have filed lawsuits against federal officials in charge of bi-national issues like sewage flows into our coastal waters.

And as all of this news is happening, we had a small brush fire in the Dulzura area of the county this week and with it, a reminder from Cal Fire that because of all the rain we’ve had this year, the risk of wildfires during the warm summer and fall months has gone up because of all the increased vegetation that’s resulted.

So as we now move into June and the tourist season begins in San Diego, things could be heating up this summer, politically, economically and environmentally.
