DEA Cracking Down on Illegal Marijuana Extraction Labs in San Diego

The DEA is cracking down on the people in San Diego County who are operating illegal labs extracting THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

A large Butane Hash Oil (BHO) extraction laboratory in Warner Springs is one of the latest and you can see photos below. The laboratory was approximately 15 times larger than the recent BHO lab explosion in Mira Mesa.

In addition to this lab, the fire department recently responded to a call of an explosion at 920 El Cajon Blvd, in the City of El Cajon. Upon arrival, the fire department contained an active fire. One adult male associated with the fire was transported to the hospital with extensive burns.

The DEA’s Narcotic Task Force responded to the scene and identified an active hash oil extraction laboratory. Marijuana, laboratory equipment, and approximately a dozen 55-gallon drums containing a volatile solvent were located inside the building.

Extraction is the process of removing THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, from marijuana plant material creating a concentrated oil that can be up to 90% pure. These labs are extremely dangerous due to the potential for fire and explosions because flammable solvents are used to extract THC from marijuana plant material. The DEA says these labs are operating in violation of both federal and state laws.
