Monday's partial solar eclipse in San Diego County drew hundreds of people to Balboa Park.

There were cheers and applause at the Fleet Science Center where hundreds of San Diegans gathered to watch the eclipse using protective eye-wear and eclipse glasses. The peak of the eclipse happened shortly after 11 a.m. when the moon's shadow covered about half of the sun.

The so-called ``path of totality'' that saw the sun completely blocked out occured in 14 other states from Texas to Maine wheen the sky went dark for several minutes.

The next total eclipse of the sun in the U.S. isn't until 2044.
