A 55-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 8 in El Cajon early Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP said the wreck was reported just after 5:20 a.m. on westbound I-8 near West Main Street.
CHP officials stated the 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis was traveling around 80 mph “during the hours of darkness and light rain” when the driver tried to exit onto the West Main Street off ramp. But the sedan struck a guardrail and then overturned multiple times.
The driver, identified as an El Cajon resident, but whose name was not immediately released, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car according to the CHP. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Due to the emergency response, at least two lanes in the immediate area were shut down until 7:55 a.m. and traffic on the westbound side of I-8 was backed up for miles.
