Two Good Samaritans Killed on the 15 Freeway in DUI Involved Crash

Two Good Samaritans were killed early Thursday morning on the 15 freeway near Bonsal as they were helping a motorist involved in a DUI crash in an SUV in the northbound lanes.

The disabled SUV and the two victims were struck by a car according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash led to the closure of the northbound lanes of I-15 for several hours, causing a huge backup. All lanes reopened shortly before 9 a.m. The crash happened shortly after 4 a.m. on the 15, north of state Route 76 when the driver of a Honda CR-V lost control and struck the center median, leaving the car disabled. Two people pulled over and went to help and a short time later, a driver in a Honda Civic struck the disabled car and the good Samaritans.

Here is the official new release from the California Highway Patrol:

On June 11, 2026, at approximately 4:10 a.m., officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Oceanside Area responded to a multiple-vehicle traffic crash on northbound Interstate 15, north of State Route 76, which resulted in two fatalities and multiple injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates a 21-year-old male was driving a Honda CR-V northbound on Interstate 15 when he rear-ended a Toyota Sienna occupied by two individuals traveling in the # 3 lane. Following the crash, the Honda CR-V lost control, struck a guardrail, and came to rest disabled within the # 2 lane.

Two independent Good Samaritans stopped to render aid. One was a male and the other was a female. While both individuals were assisting the driver of the Honda CR-V on the driver’s side of the vehicle, a Honda Civic traveling northbound struck the passenger side of the disabled Honda CR-V. As a result of the impact, both Good Samaritans sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene. All other involved parties sustained minor to moderate injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the Honda CR-V was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the initial crash. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

The California Highway Patrol reminds motorists to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs and to exercise extreme caution when approaching disabled vehicles, emergency scenes, or stopped vehicles on the roadway.

This incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information or video of the crash is asked to contact the CHP Oceanside Area Office at (760) 643-3400.
