A team of graduate students at UCSD has hacked into a Boeing 737 aircraft, then contacted Boeing to show them how they did it. The engineering feat was research according to the students, not sabotage and done in about 60-seconds.
The device is the size of a quarter. It allowed remote access to the aircraft's mainframe computer.
This hacking was part of a six year university program where a handful of doctoral students research vulnerabilities of critical infrastructure.
Boeing has not shared how or if it has secured the issue. However, in the UCSD research paper, the company was quoted as saying “Safety is the foundation of everything we do, and we take threats to our products seriously."
