Fire Destroys Portion Of Mall In El Cajon, Forces Evacuation

Early Wednesday morning a fire broke out at a shopping center on Broadway near Ballantyne Street in El Cajon. Multiple businesses were destroyed and nearby residents had to be evacuated.

The fire began at around 3 am in one building of the center and quickly spread to others nearby. When fire crews reached the scene, they found a “large body of fire in what appeared to be a restaurant," said Batt. Chief Brent Baum with Heartland Fire-Rescue. By the time the blaze was extinguished, four businesses in the center were destroyed, including: Mina Jewelry Store, Kabul Star Restaurant, and Juanita and Ramiro’s Beauty and Barber Salon.

The size and intensity of the fire also threatened nearby homes on Birchwood Lane, and residents were evacuated as a precaution.
