Fletcher Out: Supervisor Resigns following Sexual Assault Allegations

SAN DIEGO - San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher is stepping down.

The announcement came via Twitter late Wednesday night. A lawsuit accuses him of sexual assault and harassment by a subordinate while simultaneously serving as the Metropolitan Transit System chairman.

Fletcher announced on Sunday he was entering a treatment center for post-traumatic stress and alcohol abuse and would not seek election for a state senate seat. While receiving treatment at an out of state facility, he wrote, ``the strain on my wife and family over this past week has been immense and unbearable. A combination of my personal mistakes plus false accusations has created a burden that my family shouldn't have to bear."

Supervisor Jim Desmond issued a statement Thursday which said Fletcher's resignation is a necessary step for the future of the county.

"The focus should be on the people we serve in this region and abuses of power cannot be tolerated," Desmond said.
