Children under 12 will not be able to ride e-bikes in La Mesa.
The City Council unanimously voted to introduce new regulations. The pilot program still needs final approval to implement the restrictions that would cover Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes.
Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes allow riders to pedal and reach maximum speeds of approximately 20 miles per hour, though Class 2 e-bikes include a throttle that provides additional power.
The city has seen an increase in e-bike related accidents in recent months, which prompted the decision to follow other cities in San Diego County that have implemented similar regulations.
A final vote on the new rules is expected at an upcoming City Council meeting.
