How Divided Are We and What to Do About It

It’s on the minds of many Americans these days.

Just ask someone if they think there is more division among people now and most will probably say yes.

And a new poll of about one thousand registered voters across the country reflects those feelings and more. The online survey was jointly conducted by a respected Republican pollster and a respected Democrat pollster at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics.

They found that 75 percent of people in each party say they think people in the other party are generally bullies.

And the pollsters say that half of the American voters they surveyed said that they have friends or relatives who have changed because of the media they consumer.

And 25 percent of those surveyed said they have lost friends over political differences…with the same amount of people in the survey saying they avoid some friends and relatives with whom they disagree.

So basically this new survey of registered voters confirms what we already know that; most Republicans don’t like most Democrats and most Democrats don’t like most Republicans.

This may not be something that’s new, but this new nationwide survey about what Democrats and Republicans think of each other, indicates that it has gotten worse, a lot worse.

And while there always will be differences among us, it should raise concerns and questions about what we all need to do to better respect one another as Americans and not as only political partisans.
