Your Weekend Entertainment Choices

FRIDAY –

Lots of sports going on.

At Snapdragon Stadium, the SAN DIEGO WAVE FC will be reigning over the Seattle Reign. The Wave have a six game winning streak going, so let’s hope they extend it to seven.

Over at SDSU at Viejas Arena, AVP professional beach volleyball has week 2 of their league going on, with four teams playing. The San Diego Smash are the reigning league champs, so you can check them out, and there’s food, drinks, and entertainment for the family.

The BEATLES vs the STONES sounds like a sporting event, but it’s two tribute bands doing a show together at the Belly Up Tavern in SOLANA BEACH. I’ve seen this show before and it’s a lot of fun, if you’re a fan of either band.

SATURDAY –

Some music festivals going on. The NORTH PARK MUSIC FESTIVAL runs from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at various venues in North Park with over 40 live acts, with artists and vendors. Some venues are 21 and up.

If you like apple pie instead of beer with your music festivals, the JULIAN TOWN SQUARE MUSIC FESTIVAL is going on, and it’s free. It’s their 4th year, and they’ll have food, artists, and lots of music, including Tim Flannerey, Kimmi Bitter (who is getting a lot of attention in the local music scene), Cathryn Beeks, and more.

The EAST VILLAGE BLUES FEST is in their 4th year and happening at the Quartyard DOWNTOWN. You can see San Diegan boogie woogie legend Sue Palmer, Len Rainey, The Tighten Ups, and more.

Catch MUSIC IN THE PARK at the Memorial Park Bowl in CHULA VISTA. That’s a free event for the whole family, starting at 4:00. The band Grooveline San Diego will be playing their funk, dance, and R&B tunes.

CINDERELLA is going to be at the Balboa Theatre DOWNTOWN. Now, that’s not the ‘80s hair metal band, but the classic story done in a breathtaking ballet.

Some big name bands are in town. BRAD PAISLEY and WALKER HAYES as part of their “Truck Still Works” world tour, makes a truck stop at PETCO PARK.

TROMBONE SHORTY is at the Rady Shell DOWNTOWN. This Grammy-winning horn player has some New Orleans flavored vibes with his funk and jazz. Always a great show.

There’s a Bob Marley birthday celebration at Humphrey’s By the Bay in SHELTER ISLAND, with a performance by STEPHEN MARLEY.

Because The Doors are my favorite band, I’ll be at the STRANGE DAYS show in SAN MARCOS. They’re a terrific Doors tribute act that has been impressing folks for years.

And, if you’re looking for laughs, we’ve got comedian/actor SHANE GILLIS at Pechanga Arena.

At Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego FC play a friendly match against Mexican powerhouse Club America. Kick-off is at 7pm.

ON TV – the NBA Finals have started, they’re on ABC.

RESIDENT ALIEN is back with season 4 on SyFy and USA Networks.

Saturday night, CNN is airing a live showing of George Clooney as Edward R. Murrow in GOODNIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK.

Sunday night, the TONY AWARDS, hosted by Cynthia Erivo, airs on CBS. You might see Clooney win for his performance.

AT THE MOVIES – the big one opening is BALLERINA, which is a John Wick spinoff (so yes, you will see Keanue Reeves and Ian McShane). Now, when I saw Tom Cruise’s girlfriend Ana de Armas in such a fun fight scene in the Bond film “No Time to Die” I thought she’d be great in an action picture. I was wrong. She didn’t seem believable as someone who could beat up all these villains. But maybe that’s because she ends up fighting about 100 of them, much bigger men, and she takes a beating. And you wonder how she doesn’t have broken fists, broken ribs, or can even go on. It’s just too over-the-top. And because the script is so bad, you never really care about the character. I should mention, while I was a fan of the first “John Wick” I haven’t liked any of the films since. And this is a spinoff that just doesn’t work. It’s also annoying that all the rules they create for this world (i.e., you can’t kill anybody while staying at the Continental Hotel, yet they always do). It’s probably easier to just list the only three things I liked about this movie: seeing Norman Reedus in it (mostly because my wife loved him so much in “The Walking Dead”); seeing Anjelica Huston talking tough while puffing on a cigar, and a fight scene involving grenades being tossed constantly. There’s a scene that involves flamethrowers that’s utterly ridiculous, but then, most of the fight scenes were. And it just got repetitive. It’s also rather predictable. Fans of the series will enjoy this. I didn’t. 1 star out of 5.
